Red Lodge Clay Center, April/May 2014

Red Lodge Clay Center, Community Clay Quilt, Workshop, MJ Wood DO-GOOD Residency

I was selected as the inaugural MJ WOOD DO-GOOD short term resident at Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge Montana. The The DO GOOD-MJ Wood Memorial Short-Term Residency is an underwritten residency intended to support ceramic artists who wish to develop a body of work with a socially-conscious spirit and a strong sense of community engagement. Through a competitive application process one candidate per year will be selected to work at the Red Lodge Clay Center Studios with a full waiver of the residency fee. An additional stipend may be available for selected projects to assist with travel and/or production costs during residency. My residency was two months from March 1 to May 2. It was a wonderful experience for which I am very grateful. This residency offered me the opportunity to creatively manifest and sort out all my experiences and research from my time in India during my Fulbright Scholar Grant. Also, I was able to engage the local community of Red Lodge and I really enjoyed working with the people of Red Lodge. I felt so welcome by the people as they have a close knit community that they all value and are committed to maintaining and sharing with all who visit. I really hope that I can return to Red Lodge and work with the folks of Red Lodge at the Red Lodge Clay Center again!!! In order to fund this residency, I created a Kickstarter campaign and was successful in reaching the goal. It was an encouraging and wonderful experience to receive support from so many friends to help make this residency possible. I have included the video I created to for my Kickstarter campaign that explains the project I proposed for the MJ WOOD DO-GOOD residency. Please click here to read my proposal.

Morgan State University, School of Architecture, Visiting Artist

Sanskriti Kendra - New Delhi, India - April 2013

During my 2012-2013 Fulbright Scholar Grant in India, I conducted a workshop focusing on slips and glazes combined with community studio management at Sanskriti Kendra in New Delhi, India. This was a four day workshop in which I worked with members of the ceramic cooperative studio. I introduced the process of colored slips, working at cone 6 and 04 temperatures. The participating members experienced hands on workshop of making test tiles and testing various colors in both slips and glazes at cone 6 and 04 firing temperatures in oxidation, gas kiln firing. It was a wonderful experience and I had a great time working with the ceramic community of Sanskriti Kendra in New Delhi.
